Ferguson Sets AMCC Strikeout and Win Record as Redhawks Earn NCAA Tournament Victory

MARIETTA, OH – La Roche Baseball (31-14) marched on in the NCAA Mideast Regional defeating NEAC Champion Penn State Berks (19-21) 7-1. Tomorrow, the Redhawks will meet the loser of Salisbury vs. Case Western who square off at 7:45PM tonight.

Pitcher Tyler Ferguson got the starting nod and was spectacular again. He threw all nine innings and allowed just one run and six total baserunners while striking out ten batters. He made history in the process by breaking the AMCC's single season win and strikeout record.

The previous win record of 10 was set in 2006 by Penn State Behrend's Chris McCartney and Frostburg State's Billy Hollister while Pitt-Bradford's Bobby Wyant held the strikeout record since 2005 when he fanned 104 batters. Additionally, Ferguson also matched current assistant coach James Connelly as the school's all-time wins leader.

La Roche's offense was terrific in the win as well, especially in the second inning when they took control of the game. Franzee Barlamas and Colin Feikles led off the inning with singles and Sean Lubin followed with an RBI hit up the right field line to take a 1-0 lead. Designated hitter Ben Herstine was hit by a pitch to load the bases and Matt Sabatini, Colin Williamson, and Luis Navedo came through with RBIs to go up 4-0.

The Redhawks extended their lead to five when John Watson doubled and scored in the fourth and Herstine and Sabatini added insurance runs in the sixth to cruise in the 7-1 victory.

Sabatini had a very productive day with a pair of RBI singles and a run while Williamson hit in two. Herstine scored twice and Sabatini, Lubin, Barlamas, Feikles, and Watson all scored. Lubin and Navedo produced RBIs in the victory.

La Roche will face either Salisbury or Case Western tomorrow at approximately 1PM.
