Redhawks Drop Non-Conference Clash To Hilbert

HILBERT, N.Y. – La Roche volleyball traveled to Hilbert on Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup. Despite forcing a fifth set, the Redhawks would ultimately fall, 3-2.

Set one was all La Roche early, storming out to an 11-4 lead. Hilbert would counter to cut the deficit to 13-10, but just moments later, the Redhawks were back on top, 18-11.

The Hawks would trim the edge back down to 20-16, but the Redhawks would use a 5-0 run to close the set at 25-16 to lead 1-0.

La Roche battled to build a lead in set two, and by the 21st point of the set, 12-9.

After Hilbert evened the score at 12-12, the Redhawks went ahead by two (14-12), then an onslaught poured on La Roche, as Hilbert scored 13 of the final 18 points, winning 25-19 to even the match at 1-1.

The Hawks took the set two momentum into set three, turning a back and forth early portion and 5-4 deficit, into a huge lead of 13-5 after a 9-0 run.

The Redhawks were unable to climb back to any closer than seven points, as Hilbert took a 2-1 lead with a 25-14 victory.

As it had much of the game, La Roche held an early lead, doing so again in the fourth set, 11-8.

The Hawks again evened the match at 12-12, but this time the onslaught came from the Redhawks, peppering Hilbert to the tune of 13-4 down the stretch, evening the match at 2-2 with a 25-16 victory.

The fifth set was the closest set of the night, as the teams stood even at 7-7 at the midway point.

Hilbert would jump out to a 9-8 lead, scoring 2 of the next 3 points, then the Hawks opened the final set up, using a 5-1 run to move ahead, 14-9, ultimately sealing the victory at 15-11.

For the Redhawks, Kalli Grine again dominated, racking up a new career-high 20 kills, hitting .288 on the night, while Estelle Winck led the setters with 28 assists.

On the defensive side, four players finished in double figures for digs, led by Kaci DePalma who finished with 27, while Mackenzie Myers added another 26, plus a double-double for both Grine and Winck, finishing with 10 each.

At the net, the Redhawks picked up one solo block and 16 block assists on the night, led by Aislyn Williams with the solo block and three block assists.

La Roche concludes its week of play at home on Saturday, Oct. 4 when they play host to Salem (W. Va.) in the final non-conference matchup of the season. Opening serve is slated for 1 p.m.
