PITTSBURGH, Pa. - It took 83 minutes, but La Roche women's soccer was able to find the back of the net to force a 1-1 draw against Penn State Altoona on Tuesday, clinching a spot in the AMCC Tournament.
In the first half, neither team had any quality chances, as the defenses stepped up and took the game to a 0-0 score at the half.
Altoona opened the second half with momentum on the offensive end and ultimately picked up a foul just outside of the La Roche box, leading to a free kick goal at 51:51 to take the 1-0 lead.
Later, at 69:07, the Redhawks had a golden opportunity to tie the game, as a handball by the Lions in their own box led to a La Roche penalty kick. Unfortunately, the Altoona keeper would get a hand on the Grace Motuk opportunity and the ball would hit the post and roll on the goal line to the keeper, never crossing, keeping the score at 1-0.
The heroics would eventually come for the Redhawks at 83:13, when Motuk chipped a loose ball, off an initial save, to Zaida Gonzalez Rosado who found the back of a wide open net, tying the game 1-1 and clinching a postseason berth for La Roche.
The Redhawks will enter the AMCC Tournament as the #6 seed and will face either Pitt-Greensburg or Alfred State. La Roche travels to Pitt-Greensburg if Alfred State defeats or ties Penn State Behrend, or travels to Alfred State if the Pioneers fall to Penn State Behrend.
