PITTSBURGH, Pa. - La Roche edged Alfred State 6–5 in a tightly contested matchup, using a strong first half and a clutch fourth-quarter goal to secure the victory on Senior Day.
La Roche set the tone early in the first quarter when Kiki Nemcek found the back of the net off an assist from Alecia D'Urso, giving the Redhawks a 1–0 lead just minutes into the game.
The second quarter proved to be the most decisive stretch. After Alfred State evened the score, La Roche quickly responded. Nicole Schroeder converted a free-position opportunity to regain the lead, and shortly after, D'Urso added an unassisted goal to extend the advantage to 3–1. Alfred State battled back to tie the game at 3–3, but La Roche closed the half with momentum. Schroeder struck again on an unassisted effort, and Finnleigh Gould capitalized on a free-position shot in the final minute to give La Roche a 5–3 halftime lead.
Alfred State controlled the third quarter, holding La Roche scoreless while Katerina Strong netted two goals to even the score at 5–5. Despite the shift in momentum, La Roche's defense managed to limit further damage and kept the game within reach heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, La Roche delivered the decisive moment. D'Urso scored her second goal of the game on another unassisted play, putting the Redhawks ahead 6–5 with just over 13 minutes remaining.
From there, La Roche relied on its defense and goaltending to preserve the lead. Goalkeeper Julianna Hornikel was instrumental, finishing with 11 saves, including several key stops in the second half to deny Alfred State's comeback attempts. The defense also contributed to a slight edge in ground balls (29–28), helping La Roche maintain possession in critical moments.
Despite being outshot 21–11 and committing 32 turnovers, La Roche's efficiency on offense and timely defensive plays proved to be the difference. The Redhawks held Alfred State scoreless in the fourth quarter to secure the 6–5 win and move to 6–4 overall and 1–1 in conference play.
