LATROBE, Pa. - La Roche women's basketball traveled to St. Vincent to take on the Bearcats and former head coach Kam Gissendanner, but it was St. Vincent, nehind a big fourth quarter, taking the 65-44 victory.
A quick pair of triples put the Redhawks ahead 6-0 in the opening 1:34 and held the lead until 1:44 remained in the first quarter, when the Bearcats tied the score at 11-11.
La Roche closed the opening 10-minutes strong, hitting for five of the last seven points to take a 16-13 lead into the second.
St. Vincent tied the game at 18-18 with 7:24 remaining in the first half, the start of an 8-2 run that gave the Bearcats their first lead at 26-20.
Over the final 3:46, the Redhawks scored the only two field goals down the stretch and trailed just 26-24 at the break.
The third quarter stayed very close, as the largest lead of the frame saw St. Vincent lead at 36-32 with 5:32 remaining and the teams battled to a 41-40 score through 30 minutes, with the Bearcats in charge.
Unfortunately, the fourth quarter was all St. Vincent, as the Bearcats outscored the red and white, 23-3, sealing the victory.
La Roche finished the contest shooting 18-for-49 (36.7%) from the field, 4-for-8 (50%) from both three-point and from the foul line.
St. Vincent ended the game shooting 26-for-60 from the floor (43.3%), 10-for-26 (38.5%) from deep and 3-for-6 (50%) from the free-throw line.
Jazmine Dunn fell just shy of her 1,000th career point, scoring a team-high 20 on 7-for-15 shooting and 4-for-4 from three. She also added three assists and five steals. Dunn needs just four points to reach the 1,000 point club.
Kaitlyn Nease was the only other player in double figures, scoring 16 on 8-for-15 shooting to go alongside eight rebounds.
The Redhawks get a little break through the Christmas holiday and return to action on Tuesday, Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. when they play host to Carnegie Mellon.
