PITTSBURGH, pa -- La Roche College Softball (9-8, 2-4) swept a double header against conference rival, Franciscan University 8-0, 8-2. In Game 1, the Lady Redhawks were held scoreless in the first two innings but their bats started to heat up during the third. Chelsea Faynor (rf), Cara Giannandrea (lf), and Jennifer Hawkins (3b) led off the inning with singles before Alyson Eckherdt (c) tripled Faynor and Hawkins home. Autumn Hubert (dp) singled in Eckherdt on the next at bat to go up 4-0. The Lady Redhawks added four more runs in the fourth inning on RBIs by Eckert and Kayla Strittmatter (1b) to go up 8-0 and forcing the mercy rule into play. Starting pitcher Jessica Cullum pitched a five inning shut out allowing only two hits while striking out five. Cullum allowed only six baserunners in the win. In Game 2, the Lady Redhawks took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Sydnie Martin (c), scoring Alyson Eckherdt (dp) from second base. La Roche College added another run in the third inning on an RBI by Eckherdt to take a 2-0 lead. Franciscan tied it up in the fifth inning before the Lady Redhawks answered in the bottom half of the inning on an RBI by Jennifer Hawkins (3b). The Lady Redhawks added on to their lead with five runs in the sixth inning. Starting pitcher Kara Jo Egelsky pitched seven strong innings allowing four hits while striking out seven. La Roche Softball will return to Redhawks' Stadium on Tuesday, April 13 at 3:00PM for a double header with Mt. Aloysius.
