Softball Grabs Game 1 Win Against D'Youville in Season Finale

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche Softball split a double-header with D'Youville College on Saturday action in conference play. The Spartans won the AMCC Conference Championship in 2011 and came into the matchup in second place in the conference standings.

Kaylee Zozos hit a 2-out solo blast to give the Lady Redhawks a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of Game 1. D'Youville had a chance to tie it in the bottom of the second but La Roche starting pitcher Cyana Wulfers left runners at the corners.

La Roche added another run in the third inning to go up two runs. Kim McLay hit a 1-out double to deep left-centerfield and scored on an error by the D'Youville catcher.

Jennifer Lentz and Kim McLay made terrific defensive plays in the fourth inning to keep the Lady Redhawks up two runs and they took a 3-0 lead in the bottom half of the inning with a double steal. Alex Bauer and Deanna Tritinger reached base and Tritinger took off for second before a delayed steal of home by Bauer put the Lady Redhawks up three runs.

In the top of the fifth, D'Youville walked with the bases loaded to cut the lead to two runs but La Roche was able to limit the damage when relief pitcher Kaylee Girdwood got the Spartan's Courtney Clark to pop out. The Lady Redhawks ended Game 1 with an incredible relay play from left field to catch a D'Youville runner trying to advance to third base.

Zozos led the Redhawks with her solo home run and single. McLay doubled and scored and Alex Bauer walked and stole home in the win.

Wulfers went 4 2/3 innings and gave up just 1 run on 4 hits while striking out 3 batters. Girdwood threw 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to register the save.

D'Youville homered in the top of the third inning to take a 2-0 Game 1 lead but the Lady Redhawks answered with two of their own in the bottom half of the fourth. Walsh hit a 1-out infield single and Bauer reached on an error before a Sarah Kohli RBI groundout and Tritinger RBI single to left tied it up.

The Spartans scored in the top of the seventh inning for the Game 2 win.

Steenbeke, Walsh, Kohli, and Tritinger notched hits while Walsh and Bauer scored runs. Kohli and Tritinger drove in runs for the Lady Redhawks.

Girdwood got the start and threw all 7 innings. She allowed 3 runs (2 earned runs) on just 3 hits and struck out 4 batters.
