PITTSBURGH, PA -- Two early goals sunk host La Roche College (0-3) in a non-conference game against Waynesburg University (1-2-1) at Redhawks Field. Waynesburg midfielders Erik Burke and Tim Fields scored in the fifth and seventh minutes to take an early 2-0 lead. Possession remained about 50-50 in the first ten minutes of action, but Waynesburg took advantage of early La Roche mistakes scoring on two quick counter attacks. The Redhawks nearly cut the lead to one in the 20th minute when freshman midfielder John Mancuso set up a nice give and go with sophomore striker Gilbert Uwineza, but his shot soared inches over the crossbar. Minutes later Uwineza put the ball in the back of the net but it was eventually disallowed. Playing a Robert Fraino throw-in, Uwineza split three Yellow Jacket defenders before an inadvertent handball took away the goal. La Roche Coach David Day brought in fresh legs in the 38th minute and the move paid immediate dividends. After initially having a shot blocked, reserve forward Matt McAwley followed his own rebound, to cut the deficit to one shortly before the half. Only three minutes into the second half, Waynesburg midfielder Ryan Hartz tapped in a Burke cross to give the Yellow Jackets a two goal lead. However, the resilient Redhawks once again fought back and cut the deficit to one goal. Following two great chances by junior midfielder Nick Showman, senior midfielder Anthony Pici buried a Mancusco pass to make it 3-2. Sophomore forward Mitchell Diven nearly tied the game in the 77th with a lob shot, but it grazed the cross bar and fell harmlessly out of bounds, along with the Redhawks chances. Despite the loss, the Redhawks outshot their opponent for the first time this season. La Roche Men's Soccer will host Thiel College on Thursday, September 9 at 3:00PM at Redhawks Field.
