Men's Hoops Clinches Playoff Spot Despite Loss at Medaille

BUFFALO, NY -- The La Roche men's basketball team dropped the AMCC Game of the Week falling at Medaille 97-77. The Mavericks improve to 12-2 in conference while La Roche is 11-3.

The Redhawks clinched an AMCC Tournament berth despite the loss. They currently sit in second place in the conference with two big games this week on their home floor. Both Penn State Behrend (Wednesday) and Penn State Altoona (Saturday) are just a game back of La Roche.

Medaille used a 10-0 run midway through the first half to build a commanding 34-17 lead. A majority of the Mavericks' points came from the free throw line or off turnovers.

The Redhawks started to assert themselves later in the half. Their defense was able to force more turnovers and they closed the half on an 11-2 run for a 41-34 game. RayQuan Phifer scored 13 first half points and hit 6 of 8 shots.

La Roche cut the deficit to seven with eighteen minutes left to play. However it was all Mavericks from that point forward. Medaille built their lead up to as many as twenty-seven points and went on to win by twenty.

Phifer finished with 20 points and 4 steals. Dion Etheridge and Zach Gould each had 12 points and Arnes Bajgora pulled down 7 boards.

Medaille controlled the boards which turned out to b the difference in the game. They outrebounded La Roche 42-29.

La Roche welcomes Behrend to campus on Wednesday for a huge game. Tip of is 8pm.
